Trapped inside a mind flayer pod during the opening prologue on the Nautiloid ship, Shadowheart represents one of the earliest companions players can save in Baldur's Gate 3. Freeing her not only grants an invaluable ally for upcoming battles, but it also alters her initial attitude toward your main character. Understanding how to open her pod and what follows her release ensures a smooth start to your adventure.
How to Locate the Key to Free Shadowheart
To unlock the capsule containing Shadowheart, you must inspect the nearby control terminal situated directly to its right. The console contains a socket requiring a specialized item known as an Eldritch Rune. Proceed through the eastern doorway into the adjacent chamber where another pod is stationed.
Move toward the far end of this room past the central capsule to find a deceased thrall lying on the floor. Looting this body yields the Eldritch Rune needed to operate the console back in the main pod room. Returning to the original console allows you to insert the rune and trigger the release mechanism.
Alternative Class Options for Opening the Pod
If you choose not to fetch the Eldritch Rune, certain character classes can use unique abilities to bypass this requirement. Barbarians can attempt a brute-force strength check to pry open the pod's lid directly. This provides a straightforward alternative for high-strength physical builds.
Spellcasters such as Wizards, Warlocks, or characters proficient in Arcana can interact with the terminal using magical intuition. By passing an Arcana check, you can trigger the device without retrieving the rune. Players should consider saving their progress prior to rolling, as failing a check can result in a wasted attempt.
What Happens Right After You Release Her
Once freed from the mind flayer pod, Shadowheart immediately joins your active party for the remainder of the Nautiloid escape. Her presence as a cleric provides essential healing and offensive support during the remaining battles on the ship. She will also fight alongside you in the final encounter against Commander Zhalk.
Rescuing her grants an immediate boost to her approval rating, laying a strong foundation for future interactions. Following the crash of the Nautiloid, Shadowheart will be found lying conscious on the beach nearby. Talking to her there allows you to formally recruit her into your permanent party early in Act 1.
Consequences of Leaving Shadowheart Trapped
If you fail or choose not to free Shadowheart from the pod, she will still survive the Nautiloid crash. However, her initial location after the crash shifts further down the beach near the entrance to the Overgrown Ruins. She will be busy trying to gain entry to the locked door.
While she can still be recruited into your party at this later point, you will miss out on the early approval bonus. She may also exhibit a slightly more guarded or irritated temperament toward you during initial dialogue. Rescuing her on the ship remains the most efficient choice for players looking to romance or build trust with her quickly.
